The painting depicts the political triumph of queen Margaret, uniting the three Nordic realms in the Kalmar Union, symbolised by the three crowns on the table. Behind her is her foster son and heir, Eric of Pomerania, who was crowned as king, although Margaret ruled the lands until her death in 1412. The experts at Bruun Rasmussen had trouble reading the last digit of the year, which could be 1884 or 1887. When the painting was registered in Kunstindeks Danmark, the date was given as 1884.
