Portrait of John Russell, Earl of Bedford. Black and coloured chalks on pink-primed paper, 34.9 × 29.4 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle.
John Russell, Ist Earl of Bedford (c. 1485–1554/5), followed a military career and became Lord High Admiral from 1540 to 1542 and Lord Privy Seal in 1542. He led the suppression of the westcountry Prayer Book Rebellion in 1549. The inscription "with one eye", added later, refers to the loss of his right eye from an arrow wound on campaign at Morlaix in 1522 (K. T. Parker, The Drawings of Hans Holbein at Windsor Castle, Oxford: Phaidon, 1945, OCLC 822974, p. 55).
