The main frontier during the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792: to the north-east lay the Russians (red), allied to Austria in the north-west (not illustrated); to the south-west the Ottoman strongholds (green). The Russian army won a series of victories, several with Austrian help, and even took the fortress at Izmail. The result of the war was the annexation of the land between Bug and Dniester by Russia in the Treaty of Jassy.
